The Blackbird Project: Hatching at Wisdom Hospice

Later this year a little device will be introduced at Wisdom Hospice, to provide comfort to patients and families, keeping precious voice recordings alive forever.

The Blackbird Project will give patients and their families the opportunity to create a lasting legacy. High quality voice recordings will be captured and safely stored on a small USB device in the shape of a Blackbird for families to keep forever.

Our trained staff and volunteers will support patients and families to capture voice recordings, these might include, childhood memories, personal messages, a favourite story, piece of music or poem, maybe a family recipe or piece of advice that can be treasured and handed down the generations.

Why Blackbird?

The Blackbird Project was introduced in 2019 at Pilgrims Hospice, a family from Canterbury whose son was cared for by Pilgrims Hospice wanted a legacy project in his memory and came together to fundraise.

The song ‘Blackbird’ by The Beatles held special memories to the family and by coincidence a blackbird would often be heard singing in the garden at the Pilgrims Hospice, so the Blackbird Project was hatched and now we are pleased to be able to offer this to our families at Wisdom Hospice.

Thank You to The Access Foundation

Tracy Rodwell, Wisdom Hospice Charity’s Major Donors Officer, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the trustees of The Access Foundation for awarding a generous grant of £5,000 to support the set-up and running costs.

This wonderful contribution came as a result of an inspiring nomination by one of their employees, Taylor Huckstepp, whose family was supported by the hospice. It will help our families to capture and preserve treasured moments and we thank them for their support in helping create lasting memories for families across Medway and Swale who need them most.”
