The Windermere Challenge - A Supporter's Story

Why Windemere…

In 2014 I sadly lost my father to cancer while he was in The Wisdom Hospice and I can honestly say that if it was not for the staff that I dealt with in the run up to his passing, I don’t think I would have coped anywhere near as well as I did, they were there for me and my family and we were treated like we were the only people that were going through such a tragic ordeal even though they are dealing with so many cases just like my dad’s all at the same time, truly inspiring.   After the dust has settled you remember what they did for you and I felt the need to give something back because I believe that If anyone else is unlucky enough to be going through a similar experience as I did then they deserve the best support and care and that can only happen as long as the finances are there for the Hospice to keep going. There is an ever-increasing family of nutcases that have been touched by The Wisdom Hospice in some way, shape or form and we get together to do crazy, fun things to push ourselves to raise money for such an incredible cause. It’s addictive once you start; so, come paddle and peddle with us, I promise you it will change your outlook on life forever.

Beginning from Ambleside, we will commence the paddle & pedal marathon with a 24km cycle ride on the Western side of Lake Windermere (350m ascent). Heading through Brathay, Blackbeck and past Esthwaite Water, Graythwaite and a beautiful series of wooded areas we will then cycle round the base of the Lake to reach the Cycle-Kayak change over point. The real challenge then begins with a full 18km traverse of Lake Windermere via 'sit on top' double kayaks. You will need to work in your pairs to paddle as smoothly as possible to keep in a straight line!
After a gruelling but nonetheless exhilarating kayak along the Lake District's famous hotspot, it's time to hit the bar for a well-deserved celebration!
