The Story Behind Tommy Green’s Fundraiser, “Wash for Wisdom”

Tommy's journey in organising fundraisers for the Wisdom Hospice is truly inspiring and heartwarming. It all began with a deep personal connection to charitable work, driven by past experiences with the Essex Air Ambulance and the profound impact it had on him. His motivation was fuelled by a desire to give back, as he recognised the significance of even the smallest contributions to a charity.

The catalyst for Tommy's recent fundraising efforts was his father's diagnosis with a brain tumour. Tommy's father, an old-school individual, faced health challenges, yet maintained a stoic demeanour, reluctant to burden his family. Despite Tommy's initial uncertainty about his father's condition, he eventually urged his father to open up, emphasising the importance of sharing the burden and creating lasting memories together.

The story unfolded with Tommy recounting incidents that led to the diagnosis, including a chainsaw accident and subsequent episodes of falling. The challenges intensified when COVID restrictions limited visitation, adding a layer of complexity to their situation. Despite the difficulties, Tommy's focus shifted to cherishing precious moments with his father, emphasising the significance of senses such as the smell of flowers and the sounds of birds in the garden.

As Tommy's family anticipated the inevitable, they were in the process of adopting a baby boy, which provided a positive distraction for his father during challenging times. Tommy’s story highlights the intricate dance of roles between parent and child, as he found himself emulating the care and attention he once received from his father.

It all took a poignant turn when Tommy's father was admitted to the Wisdom Hospice. Despite initial concerns, Tommy reassured his mother that their decision was in the best interest of his father. The hospice environment, with its focus on sensory experiences and compassionate care, became a source of solace during the final stages of his father's journey.

Motivated by the impactful care his father received at the Wisdom Hospice, Tommy decided to channel his energy into organising a charity event to express gratitude and contribute to the hospice's work. The first fundraiser, held in 2021, exceeded expectations, raising £2165 through word of mouth and local engagement.

Buoyed by this success, Tommy decided to organise a more extensive event in 2023, involving local businesses, car enthusiasts, and the community at large. The event evolved into a vibrant community gathering, showcasing show cars, motorbikes, and a collective effort to support the hospice. The tireless work and commitment of volunteers, local businesses, and the community culminated in a staggering £3055 raised, surpassing Tommy's expectations.

Tommy often reflects on the physical toll of the events but expressed a sense of fulfilment and pride. He contemplates the possibility of future fundraisers, looking at different approaches, perhaps involving other businesses or organising events that align with his strengths.

Tommy's story is one of resilience, love, and community spirit. It highlights the profound impact that individuals and communities can have when united for a noble cause. The funds raised are not just numbers; they represent a collective effort to make a difference in the lives of those touched by the Wisdom Hospice.
